Article marketing is surely not a new concept. It is a strategy that has been used by experienced entrepreneurs for well over a decade now; however, it has gained an increased notoriety as more people expand their businesses to the internet and discover the effectiveness of the strategy. There have probably been hundreds of websites that you have viewed because of the page rank they gained through article marketing.
There are three basic ways to go about Article Marketing. Each is designed to bring traffic and increase your visibility in different ways. Below is a short description of each way to market your articles and how they can help you make money.
Direct Article Marketing
Direct article marketing is the use of your articles to directly promote a certain product or service that you are trying to sell. Each article will have a main keyword and perhaps one additional keyword related to that page. The first time and last time that the main keyword is mentioned should be an active affiliate link. These articles are then posted on article directories. This is an easy to understand step, but can be time consuming and some article directories will not allow you to insert an affiliate link directly.
Article Marketing To Increase Traffic
This type of article marketing is exactly the same as direct marketing, EXCEPT. Except there is one additional step that has to be added. All of the articles that you use will be linked to a page that does allow affiliate links. These pages are called landing pages. A landing page is usually on a secondary site like Squidoo, Blogger, or WordPress. Your articles will point to that page; then that page will point to your sales page.

Article Marketing To Acquire Backlinks
The sole purpose of this type of article marketing is to have your article accepted by as many directories as possible to acquire the greatest number of backlinks possible. There is one caveat: make sure the directories that you submit to have a page rank that is higher than yours. For a new website that is pretty easy, because your original rank will most likely be 0. Experience will demonstrate that submitting to directories with a page rank of 3 or higher is more beneficial because those directories will have a higher readership and be more likely to stay in existence. You will have the opportunity to include a link to your site within the article and in the author bio section.
Each method of article marketing is similar, but has a different end-game strategy. Each of them starts with one basic concept: the use of quality content. The more reputable directories will not accept poor content or keyword overloaded material. The secret lies in the ability to fit your keywords into the material in a manner that allows the article to be read naturally and get recognized by the search engines. Article marketing starts with the author and ends with a sale or optin.
